Description

Join Lyra musicians in more intimate presentations of chamber works! These are programs devised by our players and represent music that is near and dear to their hearts, and we hope you will enjoy experiencing it as much as we enjoy presenting it to you. Each concert will be performed in Rochester at Mount Olive Lutheran Church on Thursday evenings. For a more relaxed atmosphere, join us at a Friday noontime concert at The Baroque Room in the Lowertown district of St. Paul. Our Friday concerts will also be livestreamed and available for one week after the performance for those who can't make it or prefer to enjoy the music from the comfort of home.

CHAMBER CONCERT 1 • Recorder Fireworks
Thursday, September 15 | 7:30 p.m. | Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Rochester, MN
Friday, September 16 | 12 noon | The Baroque Room, St. Paul, MN *

Doret Florentin, recorder • Tulio Rondón, violoncello • Tami Morse, harpsichord

The recorder is as known an ancient instrument which was played in its different forms throughout 2000 year or more. In this concert you will be experiencing its evolution from the 2nd century AC (with a first song ever written in Greek notation), through baroque highlights by Fonatana, Vivaldi, Dieupart and Bach and finishing with some Israeli and Jewish songs.

CHAMBER CONCERT 2 • Bach and Couperin
Thursday, October 27 | 7:30 p.m. | Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Rochester, MN
Friday, October 28 | 12 noon | The Baroque Room, St. Paul, MN *

Miriam Scholz-Carlson, violin • Julie Elhard, viola da gamba • Paul Boehnke, harpsichord

Two of the giants of the Baroque, Johann Sebastian Bach, not only knew of each: they were actually pen pals! These two influential composers were consummately cosmopolitan composers, always learning from and assimilating musical styles from around Europe, and from each other. In this concert, we bring them together, performing some of their most beautiful works in a chamber music setting.

17th century England was a hotbed of religious and political upheaval. It also saw the emergence of Broken Consorts, collections of dissimilar instruments playing together in chamber settings. Hear how composers such as John Dowland, William Lawes, and Thomas Morley managed to survive and create music of unearthly beauty even for these motley ensembles when they found themselves at odds with the church and crown

CHAMBER CONCERT 7 • Song of Spring
Thursday, March 2 | 7:30 p.m. | Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Rochester, MN
Friday, March 3 | 12 noon | The Baroque Room, St. Paul, MN *

Ginna Watson, medieval strings

As we begin to pine for the end of winter, join longtime Lyra violinist Ginna Watson in a celebration of Spring. This program features the otherworldly sounds of medieval strings in joyous tunes in praise of nature’s rebirth

CHAMBER CONCERT 8 • Ramm and Friends
Thursday, April 27 | 7:30 p.m. | Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Rochester, MN
Friday, April 28 | 12 noon | The Baroque Room, St. Paul, MN *

Curtis Foster, oboe • Theresa Elliott, violin • Yvonne Smith, viola • Charles Asch, violoncello

None other than W.A. Mozart himself, inspired by his oboe muse Friedrich Ramm, wrote unforgettable tunes and virtuoso passagework for oboe and strings. Experience the delights of this nearly-forgotten chamber music formation as our season ends with works by Krommer, Masek, and Mozart.
