The recorder is an ancient instrument that was played in its different forms for the past 2000 years or more. In this concert you will experience its evolution from the second century CE (with the first song ever written in Greek notation), through the eighteenth century (with highlights by Vivaldi and Bach), to its rebirth in the twentieth century.

A program to illustrate the rich keyboard music of eighteenth-century Portugal and Spain. Not only will the virtuoso aspect mostly associated with this repertoire be featured, the melancholic and singing qualities will be highlighted, and the influence of folk music will be explored.

This program begins with a suite of Bach arias for soprano with obligato flute and violin. The premier of a cantata by Paul Jacobson concludes the concert. The new work, B+A+C+H—Lament to Jubilation, incorporates the BACH theme (Bb-A-C-B), which has been employed by composers from the time of J.S. Bach to the present. The libretto for the cantata will feature poetry and prose ruminating on our present-day realities and dreams.

Experience the musical life and tastes of Italy, Germany, and England with these seldom heard seventeenth-century ricercars and sonatas. The early Italian style of ornamenting, or glossing of the notes, permeated throughout the century and were adopted by all the major European countries, albeit with a little twist of their own nationality. You’re invited to partake in the transformation of the baroque sonata. Music of Dario Castello, Giovanni Bassano, Riccardo Rognioni, Dietrich Buxtehude, and Godfried Finger.
